Chapter 21

26 verses

1

Listen, house of Israel, all of you who are broken off and driven out because of the wickedness of the leaders of my people—all of you who are scattered abroad, who are my people, house of Israel. Listen to me, you distant lands, and pay attention, you people far away. The Lord has called me from the womb; he mentioned my name while I was still in my mother’s womb.

And again: Hearken, O ye house of Israel, all ye that are broken off and are driven out because of the wickedness of the pastors of my people; yea, all ye that are broken off, that are scattered abroad, who are of my people, O house of Israel. Listen, O isles, unto me, and hearken ye people from far; the Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.

He has made my words as sharp as a sword; he has hidden me in the shadow of his hand, and made me like a polished arrow; he has kept me hidden in his quiver.

And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;

He said to me, “You are my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified. ”

And said unto me: Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.

Then I said, I have worked for nothing, I have used my strength for no purpose and in vain; but my judgment is with the Lord, and my work is with my God.

Then I said, I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for naught and in vain; surely my judgment is with the Lord, and my work with my God.

And now, the Lord says—who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him—even if Israel is not gathered, I will still be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God will be my strength.

And now, saith the Lord—that formed me from the womb that I should be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him—though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall be my strength.

He said: It is a small thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel who have been preserved. I will also make you a light to the Gentiles, so that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.

And he said: It is a light thing that thou shouldst be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel. I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the ends of the earth.

The Lord, the Redeemer of Israel and His Holy One, says to the one despised by people and hated by the nation, the servant of rulers: Kings will see and stand, and princes will bow down, because the Lord is faithful.

Thus saith the Lord, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to servant of rulers: Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the Lord that is faithful.

The Lord says: At a favorable time I have heard you, O islands of the sea, and on a day of salvation I have helped you; I will protect you and give you my servant as a covenant for the people, to establish the land and to help them inherit the desolate inheritances.

Thus saith the Lord: In an acceptable time have I heard thee, O isles of the sea, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee; and I will preserve thee, and give thee my servant for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages;

You will say to the prisoners, "Go free, " and to those sitting in darkness, "Show yourselves. " They will find food along the roads, and their pastures will be on every high place.

That thou mayest say to the prisoners: Go forth; to them that sit in darkness: Show yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places.

They will not hunger or thirst, and the heat or the sun will not strike them; for the one who has mercy on them will lead them, and he will guide them by springs of water.

They shall not hunger nor thirst, neither shall the heat nor the sun smite them; for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them.

I will turn all my mountains into roads, and my highways will be raised up.

And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted.

House of Israel, these will come from far away; some from the north and from the west, and others from the land of Sinim.

And then, O house of Israel, behold, these shall come from far; and lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim.

Sing, heavens, and be joyful, earth, for the feet of those who are in the east will be established. Break out into singing, mountains, for they will not be struck anymore. The Lord has comforted his people and will have mercy on those who are afflicted.

Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; for the feet of those who are in the east shall be established; and break forth into singing, O mountains; for they shall be smitten no more; for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.

But Zion has said, “The Lord has abandoned me, and my Lord has forgotten me”—but he will show that he has not.

But, behold, Zion hath said: The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me—but he will show that he hath not.

Can a woman forget her nursing child, so that she would not have compassion on the son she gave birth to? They might forget, but I will not forget you, O house of Israel.

For can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee, O house of Israel.

I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are always before me.

Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.

Your children will hurry back, and those who destroyed you will leave you.

Thy children shall make haste against thy destroyers; and they that made thee waste shall go forth of thee.

Look around you and see; all these people are gathering together and will come to you. As surely as I live, says the Lord, you will clothe yourself with them all like an ornament and wear them like a bride.

Lift up thine eyes round about and behold; all these gather themselves together, and they shall come to thee. And as I live, saith the Lord, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on even as a bride.

Your ruined and deserted places, and the land that was destroyed, will now be too small because of the number of people living there, and those who once conquered you will be far away.

For thy waste and thy desolate places, and the land of thy destruction, shall even now be too narrow by reason of the inhabitants; and they that swallowed thee up shall be far away.

The children you have after losing the first will say to you, "This place is too small for me; give me space so I can live here.

The children whom thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the first, shall again in thine ears say: The place is too strait for me; give place to me that I may dwell.

You will say in your heart, “Who gave me these children, since I have lost my own and am desolate, a captive, wandering back and forth? Who raised these for me? I was left alone—where did these come from? ”

Then shalt thou say in thine heart: Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children, and am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? And who hath brought up these? Behold, I was left alone; these, where have they been?

The Lord God says: I will raise my hand to the Gentiles and set up my standard for the people; they will bring your sons in their arms, and your daughters will be carried on their shoulders.

Thus saith the Lord God: Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people; and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.

Kings will be your guardians, and their queens will care for you. They will bow down to you with their faces to the ground and show deep respect at your feet. Then you will know that I am the Lord, and those who wait for me will not be ashamed.

And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers; they shall bow down to thee with their face towards the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the Lord; for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.

Can the prey be taken from the mighty, or can lawful captives be set free?

For shall the prey be taken from the mighty, or the lawful captives delivered?

The Lord says: Even the captives of the mighty will be taken away, and the prey of the terrible will be delivered. I will fight against those who fight against you, and I will save your children.

But thus saith the Lord, even the captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered; for I will contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.

I will make those who oppress you eat their own flesh; they will be drunk on their own blood as if it were sweet wine. Then everyone will know that I, the Lord, am your Savior and Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.

And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; they shall be drunken with their own blood as with sweet wine; and all flesh shall know that I, the Lord, am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
