Chapter 5

1

At that time, there was not a single person among all the Nephites who doubted the words of all the holy prophets who had spoken, because they knew that those words had to be fulfilled.

And now behold, there was not a living soul among all the people of the Nephites who did doubt in the least the words of all the holy prophets who had spoken; for they knew that it must needs be that they must be fulfilled.

They knew it was necessary that Christ had come because of the many signs that had been given, just as the prophets had said. Because of the things that had already happened, they knew that everything would happen just as it had been spoken.

And they knew that it must be expedient that Christ had come, because of the many signs which had been given, according to the words of the prophets; and because of the things which had come to pass already they knew that it must needs be that all things should come to pass according to that which had been spoken.

So they gave up all their sins, their abominations, and their immoral behaviors, and served God with complete diligence day and night.

Therefore they did forsake all their sins, and their abominations, and their whoredoms, and did serve God with all diligence day and night.

When they had captured all the robbers, so that none escaped except those who were killed, they put their prisoners in prison and had the word of God preached to them. Anyone who repented of their sins and made a covenant not to murder anymore was set free.

And now it came to pass that when they had taken all the robbers prisoners, insomuch that none did escape who were not slain, they did cast their prisoners into prison, and did cause the word of God to be preached unto them; and as many as would repent of their sins and enter into a covenant that they would murder no more were set at liberty.

But everyone who didn’t make a covenant and still kept those secret murders in their hearts, and anyone found threatening their brothers, was judged and punished according to the law.

But as many as there were who did not enter into a covenant, and who did still continue to have those secret murders in their hearts, yea, as many as were found breathing out threatenings against their brethren were condemned and punished according to the law.

In this way, they ended all those wicked, secret, and abominable groups, in which there had been so much evil and so many murders committed.

In this way, the twenty-second year passed, then the twenty-third, the twenty-fourth, and the twenty-fifth; so twenty-five years had passed.

Many things happened that, to some people, would seem great and marvelous; however, not all of them can be written in this book. In fact, this book can't even contain a hundredth part of what took place among so many people over twenty-five years.

And there had many things transpired which, in the eyes of some, would be great and marvelous; nevertheless, they cannot all be written in this book; yea, this book cannot contain even a hundredth part of what was done among so many people in the space of twenty and five years;

There are records that contain all the events of this people, and Nephi gave a shorter but accurate account.

But behold there are records which do contain all the proceedings of this people; and a shorter but true account was given by Nephi.

So I have made my record of these things based on the record of Nephi, which was engraved on the plates called the plates of Nephi.

My name is Mormon, named after the land of Mormon, where Alma established the church among the people—the first church created among them after their transgression.

I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I have been called by him to share his word with his people, so they can have everlasting life.

And it has become necessary for me, according to the will of God, that the prayers of those who have passed on, who were the holy ones, should be fulfilled according to their faith, to make a record of these things which have been done—

I am Mormon, a pure descendant of Lehi. I have reason to bless my God and my Savior Jesus Christ, because he brought our ancestors out of the land of Jerusalem (and no one knew it except him and those he brought out of that land), and because he has given me and my people so much knowledge for the salvation of our souls.

As surely as the Lord lives, he will gather from the four corners of the earth all the remnant of the descendants of Jacob, who are scattered across the entire earth.

And just as he has made a covenant with all the house of Jacob, that covenant will be fulfilled in his own due time, restoring the entire house of Jacob to the knowledge of the covenant he made with them.

And as he hath covenanted with all the house of Jacob, even so shall the covenant wherewith he hath covenanted with the house of Jacob be fulfilled in his own due time, unto the restoring all the house of Jacob unto the knowledge of the covenant that he hath covenanted with them.

Then they will know their Redeemer, who is Jesus Christ, the Son of God; and they will be gathered in from the four corners of the earth to their own lands, from where they have been dispersed. As the Lord lives, so it will be. Amen.
