Chapter 1

1

The thirty-fourth year passed, and then the thirty-fifth. The disciples of Jesus established the church of Christ throughout all the surrounding lands. Everyone who came to them, truly repented of their sins, and was baptized in the name of Jesus also received the Holy Ghost.

And it came to pass that the thirty and fourth year passed away, and also the thirty and fifth, and behold the disciples of Jesus had formed a church of Christ in all the lands round about. And as many as did come unto them, and did truly repent of their sins, were baptized in the name of Jesus; and they did also receive the Holy Ghost.

In the thirty-sixth year, all the people throughout the land, both Nephites and Lamanites, were converted to the Lord. There were no arguments or disputes among them, and everyone treated each other fairly.

And it came to pass in the thirty and sixth year, the people were all converted unto the Lord, upon all the face of the land, both Nephites and Lamanites, and there were no contentions and disputations among them, and every man did deal justly one with another.

They shared everything in common, so there were no rich or poor, no slaves or free people; everyone was free and shared in the heavenly gift.

The thirty-seventh year also passed, and there was still peace in the land.

And it came to pass that the thirty and seventh year passed away also, and there still continued to be peace in the land.

The disciples of Jesus performed great and amazing works—they healed the sick, raised the dead, made the lame walk, gave sight to the blind, and helped the deaf hear. They did all kinds of miracles among the people, and they did nothing miraculous except in the name of Jesus.

And there were great and marvelous works wrought by the disciples of Jesus, insomuch that they did heal the sick, and raise the dead, and cause the lame to walk, and the blind to receive their sight, and the deaf to hear; and all manner of miracles did they work among the children of men; and in nothing did they work miracles save it were in the name of Jesus.

The thirty-eighth year passed, as did the thirty-ninth, the forty-first, and the forty-second, until forty-nine years had passed, and then the fifty-first and fifty-second years, until fifty-nine years had passed.

The Lord blessed them greatly in the land, so much that they rebuilt cities where cities had been burned.

Many cities had sunk, and water had come up in their place, so these cities could not be restored.

But there were many cities which had been sunk, and waters came up in the stead thereof; therefore these cities could not be renewed.

The people of Nephi grew strong and multiplied very quickly, becoming an exceptionally beautiful and happy people.

And now, behold, it came to pass that the people of Nephi did wax strong, and did multiply exceedingly fast, and became an exceedingly fair and delightsome people.

They got married and gave their children in marriage, and they were blessed according to the many promises the Lord had made to them.

And they were married, and given in marriage, and were blessed according to the multitude of the promises which the Lord had made unto them.

They no longer followed the rituals and ordinances of the law of Moses; instead, they lived according to the commandments they had received from their Lord and their God, continuing in fasting and prayer, and meeting together often to pray and to hear the word of the Lord.

There was no contention among all the people throughout the land, and powerful miracles were performed by the disciples of Jesus.

And it came to pass that there was no contention among all the people, in all the land; but there were mighty miracles wrought among the disciples of Jesus.

The seventy-first year passed, then the seventy-second, and so on until the seventy-ninth year had passed. A hundred years had gone by, and all the disciples of Jesus whom he had chosen had gone to the paradise of God, except for the three who were to remain. Other disciples were ordained in their place, and many people of that generation had also passed away.

And it came to pass that the seventy and first year passed away, and also the seventy and second year, yea, and in fine, till the seventy and ninth year had passed away; yea, even an hundred years had passed away, and the disciples of Jesus, whom he had chosen, had all gone to the paradise of God, save it were the three who should tarry; and there were other disciples ordained in their stead; and also many of that generation had passed away.

There was no contention in the land because the love of God lived in the hearts of the people.

There was no envy, no conflict, no chaos, no sexual immorality, no lying, no murder, or any kind of wickedness; and there could not have been a happier people among all those created by the hand of God.

And there were no envyings, nor strifes, nor tumults, nor whoredoms, nor lyings, nor murders, nor any manner of lasciviousness; and surely there could not be a happier people among all the people who had been created by the hand of God.

There were no robbers or murderers, and there were no Lamanites or any other -ites; instead, they were united as the children of Christ and heirs to the kingdom of God.

They were truly blessed, for the Lord blessed everything they did. They were blessed and prospered until one hundred and ten years had passed, and the first generation since Christ had passed away, and there was no contention anywhere in the land.

Nephi, who kept this last record on the plates of Nephi, died, and his son Amos took over and kept the record on the plates of Nephi as well.

He kept it for eighty-four years, and there was still peace in the land, except for a small group of people who had left the church and taken on the name of Lamanites. So, there began to be Lamanites again in the land.

Amos died as well, in the one hundred and ninety-fourth year after Christ’s coming, and his son Amos took over keeping the record. He also kept it on the plates of Nephi, and it was written in the book of Nephi, which is this book.

Now I, Mormon, want you to know that the people had multiplied so much that they were spread across the entire land, and they had become extremely rich because of their prosperity in Christ.

Now, in the two hundred and first year, some people among them began to be prideful, wearing expensive clothing, all kinds of fine pearls, and the luxurious things of the world.

From that time on, they no longer shared their goods and possessions in common.

They started dividing into classes, building churches for themselves to make money, and began to deny the true church of Christ.

When two hundred and ten years had passed, there were many churches in the land. Many churches claimed to know Christ, but they denied much of his gospel, allowing all kinds of wickedness and giving sacred things to those who had been forbidden to receive them because of unworthiness.

And it came to pass that when two hundred and ten years had passed away there were many churches in the land; yea, there were many churches which professed to know the Christ, and yet they did deny the more parts of his gospel, insomuch that they did receive all manner of wickedness, and did administer that which was sacred unto him to whom it had been forbidden because of unworthiness.

This church grew rapidly because of wickedness and because Satan gained control over their hearts.

There was another church that denied Christ, and they persecuted the true church of Christ because of their humility and their belief in Christ. They also looked down on them because of the many miracles that happened among them.

So they used their power and authority against the disciples of Jesus who stayed with them, and they threw them into prison; but by the power of God's word within them, the prisons were split in two, and the disciples went out performing great miracles among the people.

Despite all these miracles, the people hardened their hearts and tried to kill them, just as the Jews in Jerusalem tried to kill Jesus, as he had said.

However, the people hardened their hearts, because many priests and false prophets led them to establish many churches and commit all kinds of sin. They attacked the followers of Jesus, but the followers of Jesus did not fight back. Over the years, they declined in faith and became more wicked, until two hundred and thirty years had passed.

And they did smite upon the people of Jesus; but the people of Jesus did not smite again. And thus they did dwindle in unbelief and wickedness, from year to year, even until two hundred and thirty years had passed away.

In the two hundred and thirty-first year, there was a great division among the people.

In that year, a group of people called the Nephites arose, and they were true believers in Christ. Among them were those whom the Lamanites called Jacobites, Josephites, and Zoramites.

So the true believers in Christ, and the true worshipers of Christ—including the three disciples of Jesus who were to remain—were called Nephites, Jacobites, Josephites, and Zoramites.

Those who rejected the gospel were called Lamanites, Lemuelites, and Ishmaelites. They did not dwindle in unbelief, but instead willfully rebelled against the gospel of Christ. They taught their children not to believe, just as their ancestors had dwindled from the beginning.

It was because of the wickedness and abominations of their fathers, just like it was in the beginning. They were taught to hate the children of God, just as the Lamanites were taught to hate the children of Nephi from the start.

After three hundred and five years had passed, and the people were still living in wickedness, Amos died, and his brother Ammaron took over keeping the record.
