1

When the sixty-second year of the reign of the judges ended, all these things had happened, and most of the Lamanites had become a righteous people, to the point that their righteousness was greater than that of the Nephites because of their firmness and steadiness in the faith.

And it came to pass that when the sixty and second year of the reign of the judges had ended, all these things had happened and the Lamanites had become, the more part of them, a righteous people, insomuch that their righteousness did exceed that of the Nephites because of their firmness and their steadiness in the faith.

Many of the Nephites had become hardened, unrepentant, and extremely wicked, so much that they rejected the word of God and all the preaching and prophesying that came among them.

For behold, there were many of the Nephites who had become hardened and impenitent and grossly wicked, insomuch that they did reject the word of God and all the preaching and prophesying which did come among them.

However, the people of the church had great joy because of the conversion of the Lamanites, and because the church of God had been established among them. They spent time together, rejoiced together, and felt great happiness.

Nevertheless, the people of the church did have great joy because of the conversion of the Lamanites, yea, because of the church of God, which had been established among them. And they did fellowship one with another and did rejoice one with another, and did have great joy.

Many of the Lamanites went down to the land of Zarahemla and told the Nephite people how they were converted, encouraging them to have faith and repent.

And it came to pass that many of the Lamanites did come down into the land of Zarahemla, and did declare unto the people of the Nephites the manner of their conversion, and did exhort them to faith and repentance.

Many preached with great power and authority, leading many people to become deeply humble and to follow God and the Lamb with humility.

Yea, and many did preach with exceedingly great power and authority, unto the bringing down many of them into the depths of humility, to be the humble followers of God and the Lamb.

Many of the Lamanites went into the land northward, and Nephi and Lehi also went into the land northward to preach to the people. That is how the sixty-third year ended.

And it came to pass that many of the Lamanites did go into the land northward; and also Nephi and Lehi went into the land northward, to preach unto the people. And thus ended the sixty and third year.

There was peace throughout the land, so the Nephites could travel to any part of the land they wanted, whether among the Nephites or the Lamanites.

And behold, there was peace in all the land, insomuch that the Nephites did go into whatsoever part of the land they would, whether among the Nephites or the Lamanites.

The Lamanites also traveled wherever they wanted, whether among the Lamanites or the Nephites, and they freely interacted with each other to buy, sell, and make profit as they wished.

And it came to pass that the Lamanites did also go whithersoever they would, whether it were among the Lamanites or among the Nephites; and thus they did have free intercourse one with another, to buy and to sell, and to get gain, according to their desire.

They became extremely rich, both the Lamanites and the Nephites. They had an abundance of gold, silver, and all kinds of precious metals, both in the land south and in the land north.

And it came to pass that they became exceedingly rich, both the Lamanites and the Nephites; and they did have an exceeding plenty of gold, and of silver, and of all manner of precious metals, both in the land south and in the land north.

The land to the south was called Lehi, and the land to the north was called Mulek, named after the son of Zedekiah. The Lord brought Mulek into the northern land and Lehi into the southern land.

Now the land south was called Lehi and the land north was called Mulek, which was after the son of Zedekiah; for the Lord did bring Mulek into the land north, and Lehi into the land south.

There was every kind of gold in both these lands, as well as silver and all kinds of precious ore. There were also skilled craftsmen who worked with all kinds of ore and refined it, and in this way they became rich.

And behold, there was all manner of gold in both these lands, and of silver, and of precious ore of every kind; and there were also curious workmen, who did work all kinds of ore and did refine it; and thus they did become rich.

They raised plenty of grain in both the north and the south, and they prospered greatly in both regions. Their population grew, and they became very strong in the land. They also raised many flocks and herds, including many fattened animals.

They did raise grain in abundance, both in the north and in the south; and they did flourish exceedingly, both in the north and in the south. And they did multiply and wax exceedingly strong in the land. And they did raise many flocks and herds, yea, many fatlings.

Their women worked hard, spinning and making all kinds of cloth—fine-twined linen and every type of fabric—to clothe themselves. In this way, the sixty-fourth year passed in peace.

Behold their women did toil and spin, and did make all manner of cloth, of fine-twined linen and cloth of every kind, to clothe their nakedness. And thus the sixty and fourth year did pass away in peace.

In the sixty-fifth year they also had great joy and peace, with much preaching and many prophecies about what was to come. That is how the sixty-fifth year ended.

In the sixty-sixth year of the reign of the judges, Cezoram was murdered by an unknown person as he sat on the judgment seat. In that same year, his son, who had been appointed by the people to take his place, was also murdered. That is how the sixty-sixth year ended.

And it came to pass that in the sixty and sixth year of the reign of the judges, behold, Cezoram was murdered by an unknown hand as he sat upon the judgment-seat. And it came to pass that in the same year, that his son, who had been appointed by the people in his stead, was also murdered. And thus ended the sixty and sixth year.

At the beginning of the sixty-seventh year, the people started becoming extremely wicked again.

The Lord had blessed them for so long with worldly riches that they hadn’t been stirred up to anger, wars, or bloodshed. Because of this, they started to set their hearts on their riches and began seeking wealth so they could be lifted above one another. They began to commit secret murders, and to rob and plunder, so they could gain more.

For behold, the Lord had blessed them so long with the riches of the world that they had not been stirred up to anger, to wars, nor to bloodshed; therefore they began to set their hearts upon their riches; yea, they began to seek to get gain that they might be lifted up one above another; therefore they began to commit secret murders, and to rob and to plunder, that they might get gain.

Those murderers and plunderers were a group formed by Kishkumen and Gadianton. There were many, even among the Nephites, who belonged to Gadianton’s group. However, they were even more numerous among the more wicked part of the Lamanites. They were called Gadianton’s robbers and murderers.

And now behold, those murderers and plunderers were a band who had been formed by Kishkumen and Gadianton. And now it had come to pass that there were many, even among the Nephites, of Gadianton’s band. But behold, they were more numerous among the more wicked part of the Lamanites. They were the ones who murdered the chief judge Cezoram and his son while they were in the judgment seat, and they were not found.

When the Lamanites discovered that there were robbers among them, they were extremely sorrowful, and they used every means in their power to destroy them from the face of the earth.

Satan stirred up the hearts of most of the Nephites, so they joined with those groups of robbers and entered into their covenants and oaths to protect and support each other in whatever difficult situations they faced, so they would not be punished for their murders, plundering, and stealing.

But behold, Satan did stir up the hearts of the more part of the Nephites, insomuch that they did unite with those bands of robbers, and did enter into their covenants and their oaths, that they would protect and preserve one another in whatsoever difficult circumstances they should be placed, that they should not suffer for their murders, and their plunderings, and their stealings.

They had their signs, their secret signs, and their secret words so they could recognize a brother who had entered into the covenant. This way, no matter what wickedness his brother did, he would not be harmed by him or by anyone else who belonged to the group and had made this covenant.

And it came to pass that they did have their signs, yea, their secret signs, and their secret words; and this that they might distinguish a brother who had entered into the covenant, that whatsoever wickedness his brother should do he should not be injured by his brother, nor by those who did belong to his band, who had taken this covenant.

In this way, they could murder, plunder, steal, commit sexual immorality, and do all kinds of wickedness, going against the laws of their country and the laws of their God.

Anyone who belonged to their group and revealed their wickedness and abominations to the world would be judged, not by the laws of their country, but by the laws of their wickedness, which had been given by Gadianton and Kishkumen.

These secret oaths and covenants are the ones that Alma commanded his son not to share with the world, because they could lead the people to destruction.

Now behold, those secret oaths and covenants did not come forth unto Gadianton from the records which were delivered unto Helaman; but behold, they were put into the heart of Gadianton by that same being who did entice our first parents to partake of the forbidden fruit—

That same being plotted with Cain, telling him that if he murdered his brother Abel, it would not be known to the world. He continued to plot with Cain and his followers from that time on.

It is that same being who inspired the people to build a tower tall enough to reach heaven. He also led the people who came from that tower into this land, spreading evil and abominations everywhere, until he brought the people to complete destruction and everlasting hell.

And also it is that same being who put it into the hearts of the people to build a tower sufficiently high that they might get to heaven. And it was that same being who led on the people who came from that tower into this land; who spread the works of darkness and abominations over all the face of the land, until he dragged the people down to an entire destruction, and to an everlasting hell.

It is that same being who put it into Gadianton’s heart to continue the work of darkness and secret murder; and he has brought it about from the beginning of man up to now.

He is the author of all sin. He continues his works of darkness and secret murder, passing down their plots, oaths, covenants, and plans of terrible wickedness from generation to generation, as much as he can influence the hearts of the children of men.

And behold, he doth carry on his works of darkness and secret murder, and doth hand down their plots, and their oaths, and their covenants, and their plans of awful wickedness, from generation to generation according as he can get hold upon the hearts of the children of men.

He had gained great influence over the hearts of the Nephites, so much that they became extremely wicked. Most of them turned away from righteousness, rejected God's commandments, followed their own desires, and made idols out of their gold and silver.

And now behold, he had got great hold upon the hearts of the Nephites; yea, insomuch that they had become exceedingly wicked; yea, the more part of them had turned out of the way of righteousness, and did trample under their feet the commandments of God, and did turn unto their own ways, and did build up unto themselves idols of their gold and their silver.

All these sins came upon them within just a few years, so that most of it had happened by the sixty-seventh year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi.

They continued to increase in their wickedness during the sixty-eighth year as well.

The Nephites began to lose their faith and become more wicked and corrupt, while the Lamanites started to grow greatly in their knowledge of God. They began to keep his statutes and commandments, and to live in truth and righteousness before him.

And thus we see that the Nephites did begin to dwindle in unbelief, and grow in wickedness and abominations, while the Lamanites began to grow exceedingly in the knowledge of their God; yea, they did begin to keep his statutes and commandments, and to walk in truth and uprightness before him.

We see that the Spirit of the Lord began to withdraw from the Nephites because of their wickedness and the hardness of their hearts.

On the other hand, the Nephites built them up and supported them, starting with the more wicked among them, until they had spread throughout all the land of the Nephites and had persuaded most of the righteous to believe in their actions, share in their stolen goods, and join them in their secret murders and conspiracies.

So they took complete control of the government, and they oppressed, attacked, and rejected the poor, the meek, and the humble followers of God.

We can see that they were in a terrible condition and becoming ready for eternal destruction.
