1

When Abinadi finished speaking, the king ordered his priests to seize him and have him put to death.

And now it came to pass that when Abinadi had finished these sayings, that the king commanded that the priests should take him and cause that he should be put to death.

But there was one among them named Alma, who was also a descendant of Nephi. He was a young man who believed the words Abinadi had spoken, because he knew about the wickedness Abinadi had testified against them. So he began to plead with the king not to be angry with Abinadi, but to allow him to leave in peace.

But there was one among them whose name was Alma, he also being a descendant of Nephi. And he was a young man, and he believed the words which Abinadi had spoken, for he knew concerning the iniquity which Abinadi has testified against them; therefore he began to plead with the king that he would not be angry with Abinadi, but suffer that he might depart in peace.

But the king became even angrier and had Alma cast out from among them. He sent his servants after Alma to kill him.

But the king was more wroth, and caused that Alma should be cast out from among them, and sent his servants after him that they might slay him.

But he escaped from them and hid so they couldn’t find him. While he was in hiding for many days, he wrote down everything Abinadi had said.

But he fled from before them and hid himself that they found him not. And he being concealed for many days did write all the words which Abinadi had spoken.

The king ordered his guards to surround Abinadi and capture him; they tied him up and threw him into prison.

And it came to pass that the king caused that his guards should surround Abinadi and take him; and they bound him and cast him into prison.

After three days, after discussing with his priests, he ordered that he be brought before him again.

And after three days, having counseled with his priests, he caused that he should again be brought before him.

He said to him, "Abinadi, we have found an accusation against you, and you deserve to die.

And he said unto him: Abinadi, we have found an accusation against thee, and thou art worthy of death.

You have said that God himself will come down among the children of men. Because of this, you will be put to death unless you take back all the words you have spoken against me and my people.

For thou hast said that God himself should come down among the children of men; and now, for this cause thou shalt be put to death unless thou wilt recall all the words which thou hast spoken evil concerning me and my people.

Abinadi said to him, "I will not take back the words I have spoken to you about this people, because they are true. So that you may know for sure, I have allowed myself to fall into your hands.

Now Abinadi said unto him: I say unto you, I will not recall the words which I have spoken unto you concerning this people, for they are true; and that ye may know of their surety I have suffered myself that I have fallen into your hands.

I will suffer even until death, and I will not take back my words; they will stand as a testimony against you. If you kill me, you will shed innocent blood, and this will also stand as a testimony against you on the last day.

Yea, and I will suffer even until death, and I will not recall my words, and they shall stand as a testimony against you. And if ye slay me ye will shed innocent blood, and this shall also stand as a testimony against you at the last day.

King Noah was about to release him because he was afraid of his words and feared that the judgments of God would come upon him.

And now king Noah was about to release him, for he feared his word; for he feared that the judgments of God would come upon him.

But the priests raised their voices against him and started accusing him, saying, “He has insulted the king. ” So the king became angry with him and handed him over to be killed.

But the priests lifted up their voices against him, and began to accuse him, saying: He has reviled the king. Therefore the king was stirred up in anger against him, and he delivered him up that he might be slain.

They took him, tied him up, and burned his skin with bundles of sticks, even to the point of death.

And it came to pass that they took him and bound him, and scourged his skin with faggots, yea, even unto death.

As the flames started to burn him, he called out to them, saying:

And now when the flames began to scorch him, he cried unto them, saying:

Just as you have done to me, your descendants will cause many to suffer the same pain I am suffering—the pain of death by fire—because they believe in the salvation of the Lord their God.

Behold, even as ye have done unto me, so shall it come to pass that thy seed shall cause that many shall suffer the pains that I do suffer, even the pains of death by fire; and this because they believe in the salvation of the Lord their God.

You will suffer from all kinds of diseases because of your sins.

And it will come to pass that ye shall be afflicted with all manner of diseases because of your iniquities.

You will be attacked from every side, and you will be driven and scattered in all directions, just like a wild flock chased by fierce and savage beasts.

Yea, and ye shall be smitten on every hand, and shall be driven and scattered to and fro, even as a wild flock is driven by wild and ferocious beasts.

On that day, you will be hunted and captured by your enemies, and then you will suffer, as I am suffering, the pain of death by fire.

And in that day ye shall be hunted, and ye shall be taken by the hand of your enemies, and then ye shall suffer, as I suffer, the pains of death by fire.

This is how God brings justice on those who destroy his people. God, receive my soul.

After Abinadi said these words, he fell, having suffered death by fire. He was put to death because he would not deny the commandments of God, sealing the truth of his words by his death.
