1

The word of the Lord said to me: Take a large scroll and write on it clearly about Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

Moreover, the word of the Lord said unto me: Take thee a great roll, and write in it with a man’s pen, concerning Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

I took faithful witnesses to record this—Uriah the priest and Zechariah, the son of Jeberechiah.

And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.

I went to the prophetess, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz. ”

And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived and bare a son. Then said the Lord to me: Call his name, Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

The child will not be old enough to say, “My father” and “my mother, ” before the wealth of Damascus and the plunder of Samaria are taken away by the king of Assyria.

For behold, the child shall not have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, before the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.

The Lord also spoke to me again, saying:

Because this people rejects the gentle waters of Shiloah and takes joy in Rezin and Remaliah’s son;

Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah’s son;

So now the Lord is bringing against them the powerful and abundant waters of the river—the king of Assyria and all his glory. He will rise over all his channels and overflow all his banks.

Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria and all his glory; and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks.

He will pass through Judah, overflowing and sweeping over it. He will reach up to the neck, and the spread of his wings will cover the entire width of your land, O Immanuel.

Join together, people, and you will be broken apart; listen, all you from distant countries. Prepare yourselves, but you will be broken apart; prepare yourselves, but you will be broken apart.

Make your plans together, but they will come to nothing; speak your words, but they will not succeed, because God is with us.

The Lord spoke to me with a strong hand and instructed me not to follow the ways of these people, saying:

Do not call everything a conspiracy that these people call a conspiracy; do not fear what they fear or be afraid.

Say ye not, A confederacy, to all to whom this people shall say, A confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.

Honor the Lord of Hosts, and let him be your fear and your awe.

Sanctify the Lord of Hosts himself, and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.

He will be a sanctuary, but also a stone that people stumble over and a rock that offends both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare for the people living in Jerusalem.

And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling, and for a rock of offense to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Many among them will stumble and fall, be broken, be trapped, and be captured.

When they tell you, “Consult those who have familiar spirits and wizards who whisper and mutter, ” shouldn’t people seek their God? Should the living try to get answers from the dead?

And when they shall say unto you: Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep and mutter—should not a people seek unto their God for the living to hear from the dead?

Go to the law and to the testimony; if they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no light in them.

They will pass through the land hard-pressed and hungry; and when they are hungry, they will become angry and curse their king and their God, and look upward.

They will look to the earth and see trouble, darkness, and distress, and they will be driven into even deeper darkness.
