Chapter 12

1

After Jesus finished speaking to Nephi and the others who had been called—there were twelve in total who had received power and authority to baptize—he stretched out his hand to the crowd and said, "You are blessed if you listen to the words of these twelve I have chosen from among you to serve and minister to you. I have given them power to baptize you with water. After you are baptized with water, I will baptize you with fire and the Holy Ghost. You are blessed if you believe in me and are baptized after you have seen me and know that I am.

And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words unto Nephi, and to those who had been called, (now the number of them who had been called, and received power and authority to baptize, was twelve) and behold, he stretched forth his hand unto the multitude, and cried unto them, saying: Blessed are ye if ye shall give heed unto the words of these twelve whom I have chosen from among you to minister unto you, and to be your servants; and unto them I have given power that they may baptize you with water; and after that ye are baptized with water, behold, I will baptize you with fire and with the Holy Ghost; therefore blessed are ye if ye shall believe in me and be baptized, after that ye have seen me and know that I am.

Those who believe your words because you testify that you have seen me and know that I exist are even more blessed. Blessed are those who believe your words, humble themselves deeply, and are baptized, for they will be visited with fire and with the Holy Ghost and will receive forgiveness of their sins.

And again, more blessed are they who shall believe in your words because that ye shall testify that ye have seen me, and that ye know that I am. Yea, blessed are they who shall believe in your words, and come down into the depths of humility and be baptized, for they shall be visited with fire and with the Holy Ghost, and shall receive a remission of their sins.

Blessed are those who are poor in spirit who come to me, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are all who are persecuted because of me, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

You are blessed when people insult you, persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

And blessed are ye when men shall revile you and persecute, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake;

You will have great joy and be extremely glad, because your reward in heaven will be great. They persecuted the prophets who came before you in the same way.

Truly, I tell you, I have made you the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how will the earth be salted? The salt will be good for nothing, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by people.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the salt of the earth; but if the salt shall lose its savor wherewith shall the earth be salted? The salt shall be thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot of men.

I tell you the truth, I have made you to be the light for these people. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you to be the light of this people. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.

Do people light a candle and put it under a basket? No, they put it on a candlestick, and it gives light to everyone in the house.

Behold, do men light a candle and put it under a bushel? Nay, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light to all that are in the house;

Let your light shine before these people so they can see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

Therefore let your light so shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

Do not think that I have come to destroy the law or the prophets. I have not come to destroy, but to fulfill.

Truly I tell you, not one jot or tittle has passed away from the law, but in me it has all been fulfilled.

For verily I say unto you, one jot nor tittle hath not passed away from the law, but in me it hath all been fulfilled.

I have given you the law and the commandments of my Father, so that you will believe in me, repent of your sins, and come to me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit. You have the commandments before you, and the law is fulfilled.

So come to me and be saved; because I tell you the truth, unless you keep the commandments I have given you now, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

You have heard that it was said by those in ancient times, and it is also written before you, that you should not kill, and whoever kills will be in danger of God's judgment.

But I tell you, whoever is angry with his brother will be in danger of judgment. Whoever says to his brother, "Raca, " will be in danger of the council, and whoever says, "You fool, " will be in danger of hell fire.

So if you come to me, or want to come to me, and remember that your brother has something against you—

Go to your brother and be reconciled with him first. Then come to me with full purpose of heart, and I will receive you.

Settle matters quickly with your adversary while you are with him on the way, so he doesn't turn you over and you end up being thrown into prison.

Agree with thine adversary quickly while thou art in the way with him, lest at any time he shall get thee, and thou shalt be cast into prison.

Truly, I tell you, you will not come out of there until you have paid the last senine. And while you are in prison, can you pay even one senine? Truly, I tell you, no.

It is written by those in ancient times that you shall not commit adultery.

Behold, it is written by them of old time, that thou shalt not commit adultery;

But I tell you, anyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman, to lust after her, hath committed adultery already in his heart.

I give you a commandment that you allow none of these things to enter into your heart.

Behold, I give unto you a commandment, that ye suffer none of these things to enter into your heart;

It is better for you to deny yourselves these things and take up your cross than to be cast into hell.

It has been written that whoever divorces his wife should give her a certificate of divorce.

It hath been written, that whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement.

Truly, I tell you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery; and whoso shall marry her who is divorced committeth adultery.

It is also written: Do not swear falsely, but keep the oaths you make to the Lord.

And again it is written, thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths;

Truly, I tell you, do not swear at all—not by heaven, because it is God’s throne.

But verily, verily, I say unto you, swear not at all; neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne;

Don’t swear by the earth, because it is his footstool.

And you should not swear by your head, because you cannot make a single hair white or black.

Just let your words be “yes” or “no”; anything more than this comes from evil.

It is written: an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.

But I say to you, do not resist evil. If anyone hits you on your right cheek, offer them the other one as well.

But I say unto you, that ye shall not resist evil, but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also;

If anyone sues you in court to take your coat, let them have your cloak as well.

And if any man will sue thee at the law and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also;

If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two.

Give to anyone who asks you, and don't turn away from someone who wants to borrow from you.

It is also written that you should love your neighbor and hate your enemy.

And behold it is written also, that thou shalt love thy neighbor and hate thine enemy;

But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat and persecute you.

But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you and persecute you;

So you can be children of your Father in heaven, because he makes his sun rise on both the evil and the good.

So the things from ancient times, which were under the law, are all fulfilled in me.

Old things are gone, and everything has become new.

So I want you to be perfect, just as I am, or as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Therefore I would that ye should be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect.
