Chapter 13

1

Truly, I tell you that I want you to give to the poor; but be careful not to do your giving in front of others just to be seen by them; otherwise you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

Verily, verily, I say that I would that ye should do alms unto the poor; but take heed that ye do not your alms before men to be seen of them; otherwise ye have no reward of your Father who is in heaven.

So when you give to the poor, don’t announce it with trumpets like the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, trying to be honored by others. I tell you the truth, they have already received their reward.

Therefore, when ye shall do your alms do not sound a trumpet before you, as will hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.

But when you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

So your giving may be done in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you openly.

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, because they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners so they can be seen by others. I tell you the truth, they have their reward.

But when you pray, go into your room, and after you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you openly.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father, who seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

When you pray, don’t use meaningless repetitions like the unbelievers do, because they think they will be heard for saying a lot of words.

But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen, for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

So don’t be like them, because your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

Also, when you fast, don’t be like the hypocrites with sad expressions. They make their faces look gloomy so others will see that they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have already received their reward.

Moreover, when ye fast be not as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance, for they disfigure their faces that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.

But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face;

Don’t make it obvious to others that you are fasting, but do it for your Father, who is in secret; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you openly.

Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

Instead, store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal.

Your heart will be where your treasure is.

The eye is the light of the body; so if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light.

But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If the light within you is actually darkness, how great that darkness is!

No one can serve two masters; either they will hate one and love the other, or they will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and wealth.

No man can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon.

After Jesus finished speaking, he looked at the twelve he had chosen and said to them, "Remember the words I have spoken. You are the ones I have chosen to serve this people. So I tell you, do not worry about your life—what you will eat or drink—or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

And now it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words he looked upon the twelve whom he had chosen, and said unto them: Remember the words which I have spoken. For behold, ye are they whom I have chosen to minister unto this people. Therefore I say unto you, take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

Look at the birds in the sky—they don’t plant, harvest, or store food in barns, but your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you much more valuable than they are?

Behold the fowls of the air, for they sow not, neither do they reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

Who among you can add a single cubit to your height just by worrying?

And why do you worry about clothing? Think about the lilies of the field, how they grow; they don’t work or make their own clothing;

I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these.

If God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, he will also clothe you, if you are not lacking in faith.

Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, even so will he clothe you, if ye are not of little faith.

So don’t worry, asking, “What will we eat? ” or “What will we drink? ” or “What will we wear? ”

Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

Your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you.

So don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
